John Smith

Leonard Stanley Cricket Club would like to express their sincere condolences to the family of John Smith who passed away on June 25th at the age of 78.

John was one of the original founding members of the club when it was formed back in 1964 and will best be remembered on the field as a naggingly accurate right arm medium pace bowler who regularly used his roll up tin as a marker for his run up!

John played regularly till the mid 70’s and came out of retirement in the early 80’s when the second XI was formed and played for several more seasons encouraging the younger players. He will be fondly remembered for his terrible sense of direction and would get hopelessly lost trying to reach grounds in far flung places such as Bisley and Oakridge!

He was also at the forefront of the Cricket Club Skittles Team when it was formed in 1979 and played regularly until the last few years when ill health caught up with him.

As a life member of the club John was always very supportive to the club in ball sponsorship and also held the post of treasurer for many years.

Our thoughts are with Jackie and Mike and their families at this extremely difficult time for them

No doubt Smudger will be sadly missed by all who knew him!
